"Sipping from the CUP" is the new daily news column in The Daily Kick. Each day during Schwan's USA CUP, we'll be using this column to feature short news items, humorous things seen on the campus, and even some gossip! Read and enjoy.

Saturday was Bastille Day, and the Schwan’s USA media team celebrated by pronouncing Fruchi in a French accent all day long. Try it out for yourself – “Fru-sheee!”

In tomorrow’s Sipping from the CUP, we’ll report how many goals and shutouts were recorded on Project Pink Day, together with a summary of the funds raised.

One of our media team members, photographer Greg Savino, has had the joy of watching his daughter as a guest player with Rudbeckianska, a U19 team from Sweden. Dana and her friend/teammate Megan Lenz are both enjoying the experience of playing with a European side. Dana’s home club in Minnesota is Minnesota Thunder Academy. This week she’s being watched by several college coaches, and she hopes to keep playing at the collegiate level.

The first Fruchi Faceoff was a rousing success as over a dozen participating teams did their best to win Fruchi’s for their team by showing their best dance moves. Go to Fruchi’s Facebook page to vote for the winning dance!

The breast cancer cause of Project Pink Day has a direct personal connection for Schwan’s USA CUP director Kara Radeke. Her lifelong friend, soccer teammate and many-time USA CUP participant Arja Cody was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer just about a year ago.

“It definitely changes my view of Project Pink Day over last year,” said Radeke. “It touches close to home and makes this day a lot more meaningful.”

Cody, who lives in Lino Lakes, Minn. has undergone chemotherapy, radiation treatment, and one surgery with one remaining. It’s been a serious battle by any account, but at this point her prognosis is optimistic.

“I’ve known Arja since first grade, so that means we’ve been friends for 25 years. We were co-captains of our high school soccer team,” said Radeke. “I can think of no better way to celebrate Project Pink Day at USA CUP next year than to have a healthy Arja back at USA CUP and to stand together on the sideline watching our daughters play together in the tournament.”
